If you drink coffee, serving it black is your best option for weight loss. Black coffee is calorie-free — it's the cream and sugar that can pack on the pounds. A single cup of coffee with 2 teaspoons of sugar and an ounce of half-and-half has 69 calories. And because the average American drinks roughly 3 cups of coffee a day, that adds up to an extra 207 calories. If you were to switch from coffee with sugar and cream to black coffee every day for a year, you'd save more than 75,000 calories — the equivalent of almost 22 pounds of fat.
According to the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) there is an ideal method for making coffee, called the Golden Cup Award, which will scientifically yield favorable and repeatable results. You should use between 3.25 and 4.25 ounces of coffee grounds per 64 ounces of water (90-120 grams of coffee to 1.9 liters of water). The water temperature must be at 200 degrees Fahrenheit (+ or - 2; that's equivalent to 93 Celcius) when it comes in contact with the grounds. Lastly, the total dissolved solids (TDS) measured in any given brew tastes best to most people when it falls between 1.15 and 1.35 percent.
Caffè Americano or simply Americano (the name is also spelled with varying capitalization and use of diacritics: e.g. Café Americano, Cafe Americano, etc.) is a style of coffee prepared by adding hot water to espresso, giving a similar strength to but different flavor from brewed coffee. The drink consists of a single or double-shot of espresso combined with between 1 and 16 fluid ounces (30–470 ml) of hot water. The strength of an Americano varies with the number of shots of espresso added. In the United States, "Americano" is used broadly to mean combining hot water and espresso in either order. Variations include long black and lungo.

Some health benefits of coffee come from the beverage's caffeine content and not necessarily from the coffee itself. For example, the review of studies published in Australian & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry determined there was also a nonlinear association between caffeine and a lower risk of depression, in addition to the link with coffee itself. Caffeine, a stimulant, also has a beneficial effect on athletic performance, with research published in 2016 in the Journal of Sports Science determining that dosing with caffeine prior to physical activity increased "vigor" and decreased fatigue.
