I never fully understood how K-Cups worked until I got my own machine. Each little pod is basically a small packet of coffee grounds. The machine pokes a hole in the top and bottom of the packet that the water drips through, just like a mini version of a big coffee maker. The small serving size and ease of clean-up makes for the perfect cup with no hassle. We even take our machine camping sometimes!

4. Place the plunger lid back on top of the pot. Once the plunger is in place mix it around a bit as this will stop the grounds from settling in one place at the top of the jar and then after a minute or so you can then press the plunger down. However there are some coffee connoisseurs who actually prefer to press the plunger down as soon as they place the lid on. But the decision is yours as to when this happens.
Hammerhead: A coffee drink only served in the USA. It is an American term for a shot of espresso in a coffee cup that is topped up with drip-filtered coffee. As Kris Rosvold explains in the comments: In Oregon, the hammerhead is usually known as a red eye and uses 2 shots of espresso topped up in a 16oz travel mug with drip coffee. It's also sometimes called a "shot in the dark".
A vacuum coffee maker brews coffee using two chambers where vapor pressure and vacuum produce coffee. This type of coffee maker is also known as vac pot, siphon or syphon coffee maker, and was invented by Loeff of Berlin in the 1830s. Caffeine is a psychoactive stimulant. When you drink coffee, the caffeine travels into your digestive system, then into your blood stream, and eventually to your brain (this takes roughly 30-45 minutes). When it hits your brain, it blocks one of your inhibitory neurotransmitters, Adenosine. This leads to an increase in other neurotransmitters (norepinephrine and dopamine), causing the neurons in your brain to fire more rapidly. All these chemicals and neurons conglomerate to boost your mood, energy, memory, response times, and general cognitive functioning.
Long Black: Often called the “American”. It is the ‘benchmark coffee without milk’. It is pure coffee made from one & one half shots of coffee extract made on 16gm of fresh ground beans producing 50ml of essence blended with steamed water. Served in a pre heated vitrified ceramic cup with the essence floated over the top of a cup filled with hot/boiling water. It is a standard espresso (Short Black) but lengthened by the addition of hot/boiling water.

I don’t have a problem with people adding things to their coffee (my wife enjoys her coffee with cream and minimal disapproving head shakes from me) but I do think black coffee has its merits. It is my opinion that the vast majority of coffee additives are remnants from the first wave coffee notion that coffee is vile, caffeine is good and adding things to coffee makes it tolerable.

Thank you for the article! I am not a sugar girl, but I usually add at least a tbsp of almond creamer(has some sugar in it)… I have always liked creamy coffee.. I used to drink dairy cream with added sugar too and I got myself used to cutting that down.. Today was my first try at black coffee, because I was starting a 3 day cleanse & cant have the additives.. To my surprise I have taken it very well! I thought I would make faces or turn my nose up! But it’s not bad! I will be on the lookout for a coffee with notes I might enjoy! thanks again!!
