Unlike drinking alcohol every day, drinking black coffee actually improves your liver. It’s been shown that people who drink four or more cups of coffee a day (24+ oz., or two “Tall” cups from Starbucks) have as much as an 80% lower rate of cirrhosis of the liver. People who drink this same amount also have as much as a 40% lower rate of developing liver cancer.
If you drink coffee, serving it black is your best option for weight loss. Black coffee is calorie-free — it's the cream and sugar that can pack on the pounds. A single cup of coffee with 2 teaspoons of sugar and an ounce of half-and-half has 69 calories. And because the average American drinks roughly 3 cups of coffee a day, that adds up to an extra 207 calories. If you were to switch from coffee with sugar and cream to black coffee every day for a year, you'd save more than 75,000 calories — the equivalent of almost 22 pounds of fat.
My mom's been a long-time lover of coffee. I can still remember her sending me up to the counter for her usual when I was a kid. “Double-tall nonfat extra hot latte with extra foam, no whip.” We lived in the coffee-loving city of Seattle before coffee was uber chic, and I like to think I inherited some of my mom's refined cafe preferences. But the fact remains that at 20-something years old, I still hadn't figured out how to make black coffee that didn't taste like mud to me. Some health benefits of coffee come from the beverage's caffeine content and not necessarily from the coffee itself. For example, the review of studies published in Australian & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry determined there was also a nonlinear association between caffeine and a lower risk of depression, in addition to the link with coffee itself. Caffeine, a stimulant, also has a beneficial effect on athletic performance, with research published in 2016 in the Journal of Sports Science determining that dosing with caffeine prior to physical activity increased "vigor" and decreased fatigue. To use this to your benefit before working out, drink a cup of black coffee about 30 to 45 minutes before you begin exercising.
